The safety specialist will report directly to me, and the security specialist will report to the security manager. For specific details visit our website http://www.dcwasa.com/ and click on jobs. This location will show you all the job vacancies currently available at WASA. At the website you can fill out an application and submit it on line.
- Safety Specialist – grade 16 ($53,472 - $89,120)
- Security Specialist – grade 15 ($45,337 - $75,562)
About eight months ago my department was reorganized to include Security. The department consists of seventeen (17) staffers with responsibility for Safety; Health; Environmental Safety; Contractor Safety; Emergency Response and Planning and now Security. (We also have a 50+ contract security staff.) Our current department consists of several members of staff holding professional certifications in their respective fields. We believe we are a very progressive department with full support and cooperation from top management. As a member of a team working in Washington DC, we frequently are called upon to work with District, Federal and congressional staff on a variety of matters within the scope of our responsibilities. Within the past year we have worked with the Homeland Security Congressional sub-committee staff, Homeland Security Agency, various law enforcement officials at all levels, major universities on safety and health issues and occasionally, foreign nations.
For Your Information - here is some background on DC-WASA:
WASA is a 10 year old agency formed by an act of the US Congress in April of 1996, as an independent quasi-government entity providing water distribution services for the residents of the District of Columbia. (Note we do not produce or treat our own water. We buy processed and treated water from the Army Corp of Engineers and then we sell and distribute it to the DC residents and some parts of Northern Virginia.) WASA also provides wastewater treatment for the Metropolitan Washington DC region. This includes the surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia, plus DC. WASA’s budget is approved annually by the U.S. Congress and not the city. Although, WASA is an independent agency we work very closely with District of Columbia city agencies.
As a member of the Department of Safety and Security you will be afforded the opportunity to work with some of the top individuals in the area. The Safety Specialist’s primary responsibility is the development and implementation of proactive safety and loss prevention concepts for a workforce consisting of 1000 employees. Each member of the Safety staff is assigned specific work groups and in essence serves as that work group’s safety representative. The safety representative is responsible for all aspects of the safety program within their assigned area. The overall WASA Safety Program is guided by a WASA Board of Directors approved Comprehensive Safety Plan. The plan establishes goals, performance measures and how we will carry out our responsibilities in a consistency manner throughout the organization. Members of the safety staff have an opportunity to make major contributions to our program along with their normal duties of: facility and job site inspections/audits; training; reviewing of plans of new building designs and construction to recommend safety enhancements; oversight of hazardous materials use and storage; regulatory compliance; preparing safety statistical performance overviews for various management teams; and investigating losses to develop and implement corrective measures.
The Security Specialist reports directly to the Security Manager and will also be responsible for specifically assigned facilities and work operations. Currently, there are four security specialist positions, supplemented with a 50+ contract security force responsible for protecting WASA facilities located throughout the District of Columbia. (We also have a few facilities in Virginia and Maryland.) The Security Specialist will assist in developing a Comprehensive Security Program, for our Board’s approval and developing state of the art security measures to protect WASA personnel, facilities and operations.

Director of Safety, Health and Environmental (1/8/08)
Client: NVR, Inc. (http://www.nvrinc.com)
Location: Reston, Virginia
Organizational Overview: NVR, Inc. (AMEX: NVR), a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Reston, Va., is one of America’s leading homebuilders. The company’s primary activities are conducted through two segments: Homebuilding and Mortgage/Settlement Services. Employees who work in Homebuilding construct and sell single-family homes, townhouses and garden condominiums under the trade names Ryan Homes, NVHomes, Fox Ridge Homes and Rymarc Homes.
The company operates six manufacturing facilities that serve 23 metropolitan areas in 13 states, including Maryland, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North/South Carolina and Tennessee. NVR’s largest markets – the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas – account for 52 percent of its homebuilding revenues. NVR annually sells about 13,200 homes, averaging $398,000.
NVR enjoys industry leading results in Inventory Turnover, Return on Equity and Return on Capital and is ranked one of the world’s top 2,000 companies by Forbes Magazine. The company has built more than 300,000 homes since its founding in 1948, with profitable growth its No. 1 priority.
Although homebuilding accounts for the vast majority of the company’s revenue and income, NVR’s mortgage/settlement services segment provides a variety of mortgage-related assistance to NVR home buyers. Mortgage services are conducted through its wholly owned subsidiary, NVR Mortgage Finance, Inc. After acquiring First Republic Mortgage in 1999, the company decided to close all its retail mortgage operations and focus exclusively on NVR customers.
NVR is not in the land development business. Rather, it buys option contracts on finished building lots, thereby reducing financial requirements and risks associated with direct land ownership and land development. Nor does the company build spec homes but sells homes first and then builds them in 100 days on average.
NVR views its employees as its most valuable asset, focusing to attract and retain the most talented individuals by providing superior training, a challenging work environment and ample opportunity for achievement. The company is committed to nurturing success and an entrepreneurial spirit for hired talent from various fields and empowering that talent to be key decision-makers. There also is a wealth of opportunity for growth, given the fact that 90 percent of its managers have been promoted from within the organization.
